The pollution caused by the decorative and thermal insulation materials, such as heavy metals, formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, xylene and other volatile organic compounds, can directly do harm to the health of human. With the improvement of people's environmental awareness, the problems of interior decoration materials and air quality are getting more and more attention. Due to the rapid development of China's railway industry and its huge scale, the standard, TB/T 3139-2006 Decorating Materials and Indoor Air Limit of Harmful Substance for Railway Locomotive and Vehicle, was issued to stipulate the conventional internal decoration materials and indoor air limit of harmful substance as well as the testing methods. Domestic locomotive and rolling stock main engine factories strictly control their products in accordance with the standards.

Internal decoration materials used in rail transit products, including structure materials (high-pressure decorating boards, faced plywood, plywood, glass fiber reinforced plastic, etc.), decorative materials (PVC floor leather, artificial leather, rubber floor, etc.), adhesives (solvent-based and aqua-based), paint coatings (internal decoration coatings, damping coatings, etc.), rubber products (sealing strips, rubber vestibule diaphragm, etc.), textiles (curtains, chair covers, etc.) and carpets (carpet products in vehicles).
